2015 Varsity Lacrosse Schedule

We are excited to announce the 2015 Varsity Lacrosse Schedule!

The Woodberry Forest Varsity Lacrosse Team will play 8 of its 16 games at home in the familiar confines of Johnson Stadium at Hanes field.  This year's schedule includes the usual suspects from the Virginia Prep League, as well as teams from the very competitive IAC and WCAC conferences. As with last year, we have a competitive and tough schedule.  We should all be excited for this challenge.

We start the season in March with our spring trip down to Florida to practice and scrimmage with some of the best teams from around the United States. The first game of the season will be in Florida (opponent currently to be determined).  This game will be one of five games played in March; the others will be against Avon Old Farms, Blue Ridge, Potomac and Christchurch.  In April, we will play four games at home versus Collegiate, Episcopal, Saint John Paul the Great and Paul VI.  The four away games in April will be Norfolk Academy, Flint Hill, Cape Henry Collegiate and SS/SA.  During the month of May we will finish the regular season by traveling to play Benedictine, and facing off against STAB and St. Christopher's at home.

The state play-offs are the same format from last year-- higher seeded teams play at home the first round & quarter finals, then the semifinals and championship game will be played at Randolph Macon College near Richmond.

Thoughts and prayers

From our Headmaster:

I am sorry to report the sudden death this past Saturday of Griffin Burke ’10, a junior business administration major and a member of the lacrosse team at Mary Washington College. Griffin, who came to Woodberry Forest from Fredericksburg, Virginia, was very clearly his own man. He enjoyed debating ideas in English class. He was witty and charming and always had a smile on his face. He was considered one of Woodberry’s most enthusiastic cheerleaders. But Griffin was probably happiest when he had a lacrosse stick in his hand. He loved playing the game and being around his teammates on the varsity team. Griffin played his best in important games, earning All-Prep and All-State honors. In recognition of his efforts, he received the Robert F. Gillespie Most Valuable Award at graduation. His contributions to this community were many, and he will be missed. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, at 12:00 noon at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 10725 Courthouse Road in Fredericksburg. A reception will follow at the University of Mary Washington’s Jepson Alumni Center at 1009 Hanover Street in Fredericksburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made in Griffin’s name to Woodberry Forest School and to the University of Mary Washington’s lacrosse program.
